The office that was lent to us

In the early years there was no office to speak of. Meetings were held wherever a room could be found, and papers were carried from house to house in whatever bag happened to be free that week.

What changed things was an offer of space. A room was lent to the association, and for the first time there was an address where members could be told to come. It was modest, and it was enough.

Those who remember that period describe it less as an achievement than as a relief. Retirement can be a quiet business, and having somewhere to turn up on a given afternoon turned out to matter more than anyone had expected.

The office has moved since then, but the habit it created has not. Members still come, and still stay longer than they planned to.
