Staff Meeting

Several UN staff who were still active and who shared the above problems, together with some retirees, had meetings to address the above challenges. It was this small group who pioneered the establishment of AFUNPR. Some of them had passed away and some remain active until now. They are:

  1. UNDP : Nurjo Martokusumo (alm), Mr. Sumarkoto, Ms.  As Alimin
  2. WFP :  Sugiharso (alm)
  3. FAO :   Rudy Demetrius (alm)
  4. UNICEF: L. Diaz, Mr. Simon Asten, Mr. Bart Sahanaya (alm), Ms. Pretty Karsono (almh)

The meetings resulted in the establishment of AFUNPR on 18 April 2001.

As an association where retirees could get together is naturally in need an office. UNDP then made a decent office space available for AFUNPR to work in. The office, where discussion on problems could be held, opens on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 am to 2 pm.

At its establishment, a management team, consisting of Mr. Nuryo (the late Chair), Mr. Rudy (the late Secretary) and the late Mr. Sugiharso, was formed to address the challenging problems. This team work on voluntary basis, no salary nor any allowances. They genuinely dedicate their time and energy to help retirees who happened to work UN Agencies in Indonesia and abroad.

During the initial years, there was no thought of having a stand-by team to man the office. It was Mr.Nuryo who came to the office to take care of the work although he lived far away from the office. In later years, a small support team was appointed to man the office on a rotational and voluntary basis to serve retirees who need help.

AFUNPR MANAGEMENT TEAM

The Team consisted of: Chairperson, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Supporting Team.

Additionally, the need was felt for a hand-on support person for doing daily operational and secretarial work. Initially, there were 2 supporting Clerks worked voluntarily but later when the funding situation allows, they were provided with transport allowances.

Between the years of 2001 to 2019, there have been some turn-overs of the Management Team, but it remains hard to find a capable Chairperson who was really willing to be one who could whole-heartedly help retirees in need of support on a voluntary basis. This seems difficult due to

a) absence of self-confidence with limited knowledge about UN rules;

b) being too busy with personal matters although already in retirement;

c) residing far from AFUNPR office; and

d) health condition as getting older.

A memorable handing over picture from AFUNPR Chair: (the late) Mr. Nurjo M to the new Chair Mr. Roesman Hadi in March 2013, just 2 days before Mr. Nurjo passed away.

It is noted that there have been several personnels who made themselves available to become the Chairperson:

Mr. Nurjo Martokoesoemo from UNFPA (2 ½ years);

Mr. Ismet Hakim of FAO (1 year) and

Mr. Roesman Hadi from UNESCO (6 years). A chairperson is selected by members democratically by voting in a formal members meeting.

The elected Chair is supported by Secretary, treasurer, and Supporting General Team appointed by the Chair. In 2017, Mr. Handoko from UNDP was elected as the new Chair succeeding Mr. Roesman Hadi; then re-elected in 2019 for his second/last term.
